Welcome to the Authograph Subject Knowledge Enhancement page for chemistry.
Our chemistry SKE programme covers essential learning that you need to become an outstanding and inspiring teacher of chemistry. Acquiring subject knowledge is of course vital for a teacher of chemistry and our courses will provide you with a profound understanding of the concepts needed to be able to inspire young minds. Our programmes also cover the pedagogical aspects of teaching chemistry. Using many years of classroom experience we will give you the tools to transmit this extensive knowledge in a systematic, empathetic manner, building it into the minds of children as a logical, coherent and accessible foundation of the molecular character and reactivity of matter.
Piquing students' interest in chemistry, which is traditionally considered one of the more difficult core curriculum subjects, is of vital importance. There are now so many interesting applications of chemistry that lessons can be made entertaining and exciting as well as informative. Chemistry is advancing rapidly, and curricula are being revised to accommodate new areas of discovery and changes in the skill sets required by further/higher education and employers.
The best chemistry teachers are those with an extensive enough subject knowledge that they are able to enrich their students’ learning, answer advanced questions and use a whole range of examples and models to stretch and inspire young minds. A good chemistry teacher at secondary level will educate and inspire large numbers of youngsters to a level where they could use their chemistry as a means of entry to a science-based profession, be it the chemical industry, medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, forensic science, science teaching and more. This represents a major contribution to society.
Our chemistry SKE course is flexible and bespoke making us the first choice for pre-ITT students looking to enhance their chemistry subject knowledge prior to taking up their ITT training at both Schools Direct and University directed courses. The course consists of modules covering the full range of Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 content delivered at UK schools but may be tailored to your specific subject knowledge needs. There are also enrichment modules and content that will help you to inspire budding chemists of the future.
The extensive list of modules have been written by chemistry teachers from schools that have been judged as outstanding by Ofsted. To support the practical aspect of good chemistry teaching, our modules are supported by online workshops to learn the theory of essential core chemistry experiments taught in schools today.
Here is a list of the main Chemistry SKE topics, most of which are further divided into basic, advanced and further advanced units:
